It is necessary to treat fungal diseases of the nails when the first signs of the disease are detected, as it will be more difficult to cope with the neglected disease. In addition, the infection can spread to other nails, surrounding skin, interdigital folds. If we talk about the treatment of this disease at an early stage, then it can be cured without the use of drugs, using folk recipes. Therefore, celandine from toenail fungus is considered a very effective remedy.
Fungal infections of superficial tissues
The fungus that lives on the nails consumes the creatine contained in the plate. This leads to damage, discoloration of the nails.
It loses luster, elasticity, can thicken or thin, grow poorly and become covered in waves. Often, the disease affects toenails, because the humid and warm environment in shoes, on the floor in saunas, baths and pools is good for fungus.
Often, pathogens are resistant to many drugs offered by pharmacies to us for the treatment of onychomycosis. As a result, therapy with these drugs will not give the expected results and will lead to a waste of money.
Many active components of herbal medicines do not cause resistance in fungi, therefore they are more active than synthetic preparations.
That is why since ancient times, various baths, creams, oils and tinctures based on celandine have been used to treat nails, for which many types of fungi still have no resistance.
Fungal infections are very effectively eliminated when using celandine oil, because all the active components are preserved in it as much as possible.
The nature of celandine
Mountain celandine contains about 20 alkaloids, as well as chelidonin, which slows the growth of microorganisms that cause various forms of mycoses.
Thanks to alkaloids, the reproduction of fungal infections is suppressed, as well as protozoa and bacteria that are resistant to many antibiotics.
In addition, the composition of the plant contains the following active ingredients:
- tannin compounds;
- phenolic acids and organic acids;
- a small amount of essential oil;
- choline and histamine;
- carotene and vitamin C;
- enzyme;
- saponin;
- flavon.
Many alkaloids are better soluble in alcohol than they are in aqueous compounds. And berberines, which give a yellow color to plant juices, dissolve only in hot water.
Before you start treating nail fungus with celandine, you should consult a doctor, because the alkaloids of this plant are toxic substances.
Of course, when used externally, they have no toxic effects on the body, but when ingested, they can lead to dangerous consequences.
At the pharmacy, you can buy liquid celandine from nail fungus. It is allowed to use only in extreme cases, because it contains concentrated alkali.
This tool destroys cells with microorganisms (fungi and viruses) that have settled in them. That is why this remedy must be used with caution and only on the affected nail area.
Pharmaceutical preparations of celandine
Before treating nail fungal diseases, it is necessary to understand the characteristics and effects of drugs based on this plant. Due to the low content of volatile substances in celandine, essential oils are not made from it.
In cosmetology and pharmacology, oil extracts from the flowers of this medicinal plant are used.
The pharmaceutical oil extract contains an almost complete FCS set of this herb. This drug is used only externally without dilution.
The therapeutic effect is explained by the cauterizing, antimicrobial and keratolytic effects of the drug on the affected skin and horny plates.
Celandine oil extract moisturizes, softens and cleanses the skin and horny formations, eliminates exfoliation, irritation and dryness.
Nail fungus can be cured with this oil, but allergy testing must be done before use, as celandine can trigger hives. To do this, oil is dripped onto the skin of the wrist and the result is evaluated after a quarter of an hour.
If there is no itching, blisters, irritation or redness, then it can be used for treatment.
Ointments and oils based on celandine
Ointments and oils for celandine from foot fungus and horn formation can be prepared at home. To do this, do the following:
- You need the top of the shoots of this plant. They need to be cut and washed thoroughly.
- We wait until the grass withers a little, then grind and squeeze the juice.
- Pour this juice with vegetable oil, which is boiled in a water bath for disinfection.
- The drug must be infused for an hour in the dark.
- Then everything is poured into a dark glass bottle and left to soak for up to three weeks.
- At this time, the oil container must be shaken periodically.
- After this time, the oil is filtered and used for treatment.
No need to collect celandine in the field, in the yard or in the woods. This plant can be grown in boxes on the balcony. Also, dried grass from the pharmacy is suitable for making oil. It is asserted in oil in the same way as fresh raw material.
To prepare the ointment, dry grass ground to a powder state and medical vaseline was used.
Some herbalists claim that only fresh grass will help with nail fungus. However, this plant extract has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory, analgesic and cauterizing properties.
Nail fungus treatment with celandine (oil and cream) is carried out as follows:
- In the evening we steamed our feet. In the bathroom, you can add a little soda and laundry soap.
- Dry the affected areas on the feet, nails and interdigital folds with a towel. We cut the edges of the regenerated nails, cutting the affected area on the nail plate with a nail file.

- Agents are allowed to act for ¾ hours. After that, before bed, rinse the feet with water, and treat the affected nail plate with iodine.
Another way celandine
Celandine for the treatment of nail fungus can be used in the form of a tincture and as part of a combination remedy. Below we list the most effective recipes:
- The pure juice of the plant should be rubbed twice a day with a diseased nail plate after it has been treated with hydrogen peroxide. After the first part of the juice has dried on the nail, the procedure is repeated twice more. Treatment was continued until recovery.
- A complex mixture based on celandine for the treatment of fungus. You need two drops of oregano herb juice and calendula tincture, 5 drops of pure celandine juice and 120 g of water. The remedy is applied with a cotton pad on the affected nail three times a day until recovery.
- Colored alcohol is prepared as follows: fresh plants are washed, dried and poured with vodka in a ratio of 1 to 2. Infusion for twelve days. After that, treatment begins with five drops on each nail, bringing this number to 20. The duration of therapy is up to two weeks.
- Bathe with celandine. You need 150 g of hay, which must be poured with boiling water (one and a half liters). The mixture should be infused for ¼ hours, after which it is filtered, and boiling water (0. 5 l) added to the infusion. In this water, the legs are steamed for about 20 minutes. After cleaning the plate of dead cells, the medicine prescribed by the doctor is rubbed into it.
Many traditional healers recommend adding foot treatments with a celandine bath with soda. To do this, for 1000 ml of water (hot), we take 30 g of baking soda.
We steamed the feet for a quarter of an hour, after which we carefully removed the affected soft areas and applied a remedy based on celandine. We showered every day until we recovered.
Also, a good effect is from rubbing hydrogen peroxide into the affected horn formation and subsequent treatment with a mixture of powder of this medicinal plant and tea oil.
It may take you from 6 months to a year to treat with the methods listed. This is the time it takes for healthy nails to grow back.

Absolute contraindications are the use of the drug during pregnancy and lactation, as well as in childhood.
Applying celandine, you need to monitor the skin reaction. If there is severe irritation, hyperemia, rash appears, you should abandon this option to treat nail fungus.
It is not recommended to use celandine juice in its pure form, therefore it must always be diluted with warm water, regardless of the recipe.
Celandine has a clear disinfecting effect, therefore, in a short time it will kill all pathogenic microflora. Before using a recipe with this poisonous plant, you should consult a dermatologist. The doctor will explain whether it is possible to treat nail fungus with celandine, what are the contraindications and risks.
Steps to prevent nail fungus
You can protect yourself from fungus by simply following the rules of hygiene and timely preventive measures.
- In all public places (beaches, showers, dressing rooms, swimming pools, spas, etc. ) we wear slippers that are easy to wash. Do not walk barefoot where there is a risk of infection!
- We don’t wear other people’s shoes (including slippers at parties - it’s better to walk in socks).
- We don’t use other people’s towels and manicure accessories.
- Coming out of the bathroom, we put our feet not on the usual (and often wet rugs, not the first freshness), but on our own towels (allocating them in advance for that purpose).
- Always check your feet and nails for signs of fungus. Even the slightest symptoms (cracks/itching between the fingers, nail color has changed, etc. ), we take action. That is, we buy ointments, specials / varnishes, etc.
- We try not to use tight and narrow shoes, as well as shoes made of low quality materials.
- We often treat our shoes from the inside with antiseptic.
- To prevent the feet from sweating, we use deodorant, talcum powder, etc.
- We only use cotton socks. If it is necessary to use tights / socks (products made of nylon and other synthetic fabrics), we must remove them at home, steam the legs, and process them.
- In hot conditions, we wear open -toed shoes - for free ventilation and air exchange. Sweaty feet are a breeding ground for bacteria.
- We don’t measure shoes in the store without socks / soles - barefoot.
- We wipe our feet dry after a shower, including the space between the toes - this is where the fungus starts.
- We don’t allow cracks on the feet - we use moisturizers.
- Wash your feet with a mild antibacterial soap.
- At high risk of infection (for example, on vacation or in the pool), we use antifungal creams, powders or aerosols.
- Dry your shoes thoroughly if they are wet. We do not wear wet shoes / boots.
- We choose a proven salon exclusively for pedicure / manicure procedures.
- We do not allow squeezing, inward growth and deformation of the nail - we take timely steps.
